Soon-to-be high school graduate - 2:48 p.m.
I graduate on Friday. Wow. I've been practicing my speech so I don't look like an idiot in front of who-knows-how-many people, and I already sound like one. Why didn't I practice it before I turned it in? Maybe if I, oh, begged Mrs. Johnson to let me rewrite it, I would be fine. But I'm doing that anyway as I go along. "No, I don't like that..."
I already looked at the program for graduation and discovered that I was in the middle of the speeches. That means the valedictory speech (Polly) will be first, for some reason I haven't figured out except that the high school doesn't know Latin. Then me, the salutatorian. Then the "introduction of the honor students", which I think is some fancy way of recognising the top 25, some of whom did not take a single honors class. Yes, I know it's not fair. More on that another day, though.
Then Maria, who is supposed to give some sort of "senior reflection" speech. This year someone decided to allow a third speaker, and that third speaker would be out of the top 25. At least Maria, a nice, smart, deserving person--and a good speech-giver--won it. Oh yes, and voted "Most Likely to Succeed". I think this breaks a trend [or at least a trend during my high school years], as this is the first time in a long time that the valedictorian hasn't won it. Maybe that has something to do with Polly's and my absence all year, or maybe it's because we haven't decided what to do with our lives yet... Hmm...
Anyway, I've also been talking to some of the Scotties for my new class--the class of 2009 and probably the class I'm more likely to affiliate myself with as an adult, even though most of them are also from the class of 2005. The surveys and the Yahoo! group are becoming addictive.
Sorry for the lack of philosophical thoughts, but they will be back, oh say, next week. Obviously.
To Do:
1. Practice speech
2. Graduation practice tomorrow
3. Graduation practice Friday
4. Graduate!
